Cambridge Floorstanding Loudspeaker

I recently got permission from the wife to upgrade my home HiFI when my 30 year old receiver started to misbehave. Since I was updating the receiver, it only made sense to go ahead and get a new DVD player and speakers. It has been over 30 years since I have had decent audio so I had to reacquaint myself with what is out there.



Back in the day, I had a pair of Yamaha separates that powered Klipsch Heresy II's. I am not the snob I was, and I have a child now, so I settled on a Sony STR-DN1080 for my AVR. While the receiver is more than adequate to power a pair of Heresy's, I decided that the price of Heresy III's is just too much for my needs so I sought alternatives.



I auditioned Polk, Klipsch, Wharfedale and KLH floor standing speakers. All of the speakers I listened to were in the $600 - $800 a pair range. I was predisposed towards the Klipsch, but I went in with an open mind, and open ears. The test was blind in that all of the speakers were behind a screen. I picked a wide variety of music because I wanted to give the speakers a good workout. Among the pieces were Wagner (Ride of the Valkyries), Sinatra (Under my Skin) and Van Morrison (Into the Mystic).



I am middle aged, and in no way do I have golden ears. What I like in sound is well defined, punchy bass coupled with high definition and an overall, pleasant musical tone. While I was familiar with Polk, Klipsch, and Wharfedale, I had never listened to KLH before. I had heard of KLH, but I had never HEARD KLH. The guy at the store sort of snuck them in.



What I heard at the store was a revelation. The KLH pair checked every box for me. The Klipsch were a very close second. They had the bass and the definition, but they had a slightly harsh edge while the KLH's were very musical. The Wharfedale's were a little muddy on the low end and the Polk's were boring. They seemed to lack the dynamic range of the others.



All of the speakers that I listened to that day sounded great. The differences that I have outlined here were small and subtle, however I kept going back to the KLH's because they were the most enjoyable for me. Since I have had them at home they have lived up to their promise. I have them in a large room about 17" from the back wall. They are closer to each other than I would like but the architecture and furnishing of the room preclude moving them further apart than about 6 feet.



They like to be played moderate to loud. They keep their range and imaging when I listen to them off axis. Even though I have only a two speaker set-up, they really shine when playing DVDs and CDs. The soundstage is a little narrow which I suspect is due to the limitations of the room and the fact that I do not have surround speakers. I have had them about 6 weeks so they are definitely broken in. They continue to take my breath away and reveal nuances in music that I had previously missed.



I think that these speakers are an excellent value. I heartily recommend them.

I recently compared speakers from Klipsch, Wharfedale, Polk and KLH. I am a Klipsch fan but I kept going back to the KLH Cambridge pair. They were the most expensive (by not much) but while they shared the fullness of the Klipsch as well as the punchy bass which I like, they had better detail and a more pleasant overall sound. I didn't know that the brand had been recently resurrected so I had no agenda. If anything I was more predisposed towards the Klipsch going in but the demo swayed me. On paper the Cambridge have decent specs. They claim to go down to 33 HZ and have high sensitivity. My experience is that they do put out decent bass, and they have excellent definition. They are also very easy on the eyes. The veneer is well matched and they look good from all sides. They are right sized as they will add to a room's decor without overpowering it. I have been enjoying them for a few days and quite frankly they take my breath away. Very highly recommended.

The build quality of the speakers is outstanding. Like a piece of art. Beautiful finish. But the sound is unreal. So clear and full at any listening level. Paired these with a vintage Sansui 9090db receiver. They can take the power no problem, yet sound so rich and clean. Best purchase I’ve made in a very long time. Highly recommend to any audiophile looking for a superior product.

Great sound at a fair price. Needed to replace the Boston Acoustic Micro 110X bookshelf speakers as they were not cutting anymore with the room acoustics in our new home. Crutchfield tech helped me select an aesthetically pleasing replacement at a price point that didn't break the bank. Have not yet cranked them up in full ATMOS mode yet so stay tuned for a potential update to this review.

Pros: Full sound at low volume for TV or easy listening background and classical music.

Cons: Doesn't support banana plugs or quick disconnect connections.

I absolutely love these towers and I can’t recommend them enough. I have them set up in my living room with my record player and let me tell you, these things can get loud! But no distorting of sound! The lows are great and the mids and highs remain clean. I love that they’ve made these vintage style towers look modern as well. For the price point, you can’t beat these!
